Does Food Affect Autism?

We hear many things like dyes, sugar, wheat, dairy, and other American staples have a negative affect on our kids as they grow or even cause autism. What is real and what is a scare tactic? When you get down to how food affects the body it becomes clear that we really are what we eat. Our body literally takes the food we eat, breaks it down, and uses what it can to build our brain, muscles, and run all of our organ systems. Logically, poor quality food makes this process more difficult for your child’s body to run efficiently.

LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX

Choosing LGI foods means your brain can eat well and not have to recover from an energy crash

Many websites make it easy to find out GI of foods ex:

Many studies have been done on brain performance and the types of food we eat. An article from 2007 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology went through 9 different studies showing these impacts. Simply put, too much sugar wrecks the function of your child’s prefrontal cortex in the brain. Your brain thrives on sugar but we see a massive decline in function when it is bombarded with sugars from foods like breads, crackers, cereals, sugary snacks, candy, and similar packaged foods.

Prefrontal what??? This area of the brain is in charge of problem solving, impulse control, short term memory, focus, and WILLPOWER. This should sound too familiar. What are our kids struggling with? All of the above since this area of the brain isn’t developing on pace when we are working with the world of kids and autism.

What does this mean? Choosing foods that are Low Glycemic actually boost the brain’s performance over a longer period of time.

Making this food choice a habit has been shown to lead our kids to success as they grow. Eating foods that slowly feed the brain over a period of time keeps their will power charged up longer and allows them to make better decisions. As parents, our goal many times is to equip our kids with all the tools we can to live a life following their passions.
