Dr Andy and his dad

Here’s something you might not know about me. What I’m about to share changed the course of my life. It’s also a BIG reason why I’m committed to helping families in the local community.

I was a kid with sensory challenges myself growing up. That is where the events that shaped my life happened.

During 5th grade is where my first major breakdown happened, but my family and I got through it. Then in 8th grade it hit me hard again. The same feelings of overwhelm, worthlessness, and frustration because it seemed I could do nothing right.

This experience was so intense it affected not only myself but my parents too! They had to watch with no answers and no idea why school and friendships were so hard for me.
My parents did everything they could BUT there was a huge missing piece to the puzzle.

We spent the rest of my schooling experience going to specialists and listening to recommendations just to get a handle on my struggle. Specialists made guesses and ran tests but never came up with answers besides I may have ADHD.

This label didn’t tell us anything we didn’t know. I couldn’t stay seated, struggled to focus, felt STUPID, and was bored in about 2 seconds after the teacher started talking.

My family medical doctor was supportive of anything my parents wanted to try to help me but they were limited to medication which as a sensitive child, I hated the feeling of being zoned out. Both my parents were award winning teachers and still, they had no strategies for the “bad student” that they had.

Looking back now, I clearly see the tears in their eyes from the constant calls they received from school all those years again and again. All my parents wanted was for their child to be emotionally well and successful in school.

After learning to push through the struggle of focus and needing to move, I made it all the way to doctor school. Finally!

This is after again, failing out of college once and getting denied from a program in pharmacy 3 times. God obviously knew my story was needed elsewhere in healthcare.

Deep down was a drive to help people through struggles and it wasn’t until I graduated that I figured out who that God-given drive was meant for.

It was meant for you, mom and dad. It was meant to explain what is happening in your child’s brain, not just give you a label, a stack of resources, and wish you well.
